Poetry Slam
A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience.
The origin of Poetry Slams is uncertain. Some say the Slam started in Chicago in 1984 and others argue it began at New York’s famed Nuyorican Café. Regardless, the fact is Slams quickly swept through college campuses all over the nation. Slam poetry “is the competitive art of performance poetry. Poetry Slam puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it.” - Poetry Slam
